Inside on a 2007 should be the little dome at the end of the dashboard right in the middle. Facelift (mk 4.5) it was moved to be under the steering column with a fan on it. It would read 60 - 70 degrees Celsius and the loss of power would occur when the gauge went back to far left 0 degree Celsius (cold position). Restating would reset it but eventually it would reoccur and restarting would be the temporary solution. I replaced the cylinder head temperature sensor also called temperature coolant sensor.

I tried to find temperature sensor for this fan, but I have found only one sensor on thermostat housing. When I short-circuited it the gauge on dashboard go up.
The temperature sensor seems to be working with the dash diagnosis - the fan didn't kick in when i stopped at 105C. A/C switches on the fan straight away and brings the temperature down swiftly to ~80C, and there it goes to steady state (at idle) So, I'm still at a loss but get by with the a/c and getting into the diagnosis mode before driving.
