Diablo 2 simply does have the better story and presentation. Diablo 3 simply does have the better graphics (technically speaking). Other than Diablo 3’s modern benefits (ultrawide, framerate, etc.), all it really has going for it for me is the action. It is a lot of fun to fight (until the end of the game where it gets boring), but Diablo 2Character building doesn't have training wheels, but the underlying skill system underneath isn't any more flexible than Diablo 3's, it just asks you to work a bit harder to find its pre-assembled
Diablo is the epitome of "make it harder!" Diablo 3 had 16 difficulty levels starting from normal. So 15 that all are progressively harder. No one is here for the story. It's all about that loot grind and post game meta!!
Stop and kill the Countess, Andariel, and Mephisto a bunch for good drops, and you'll both level up and find great gear that helps when Nightmare gets tough (Diablo/Ancients/Baal) Try to get to around lvl 70 before starting Hell, and (depending on char class) make sure you 1. Kill stuff 2. Have 800-1200 life 3.
I expect by a year span, the game will change and rather get closer to Diablo 3 or Diablo 2 more. Sadly, by doing that it loses the opportunity of becoming a unique experience as they will keep all the good stuff for Diablo 4. D:I emphasizes on multiplayer yet it divides the community apart even harder than Diablo 3.
